Bengals miss the playoffs. |
| The Bengals will miss the playoffs after winning the AFC North division the past 3 years. Coach Zeigler said he was mad they missed the playoffs but , he is hoping the Bengals can go to California next week and end the season with a win. He said the team has played well the last few weeks and thinks a win would be a nice close to a losing season. He said he is excited to have watched his rookies get better and to play harder at the end of the season. He said overall he thinks the team did better then most expected. He looks forward to the offseason, and can't wait to get the team back to work for next season, to try to reclaim the AFC North. |

Struggling Bengals.. too many rookies or just Madden. |
| After starting out 2-0, playing good defense, and smart offense, the Bengals had an embarrassing game against the Bills this week. Now sitting at 2-3 it looks like the first two games may have been a fluke. The defense tried to keep the game close but just too many turnovers, short fields, and a special team breakdown closed the door on victory. The Bills came into rain drenched Paul Brown Stadium and made Pike look like a lost rookie. They picked him off 6 times, twice returning them for touchdowns. Rookie running back Johnson lost two fumbles, and was held to 56 yards. The injury depleted receiving corps couldn't get open, and the run game never took off, and was forgotten about once down so many. Mario Williams got 2 sacks, and the defense got 2 int's of their own, but with the offense falling apart against a fired up Bills defense, it just didn't matter. It would be easy for me to say its all Maddens fault, but I don't want to say Jerry didn't coach a good game, or that the Bills are a bad team. I have a lot of rookie starters, it was raining, and I had 2 key starters missing. But getting my butt handed to me so bad after playing pretty well in my other games makes me wonder what went wrong? |

Bengals pre Season Review |
| After two wins in the pre season, you would think the Bengals coaching staff would be happy. Coach Zeigler was quoted as saying, "Hell as bad as we looked on the offensive side of the ball, we will be lucky to get 5 damn wins this season. Penalties, turnovers, dropped passes, missed blocks, I am sick thinking about playing the Ravens in week one." The only bright spot is that the Defense kept us in those games and won the one against the Vikings. "If Tony Pike doesn't start making better descisions, he's gonna find the pine. Reesing helped us out last season and looks like he wants to try to take us farther in the playoffs this season. He might just get his shot." said Zeigler after the vikings game. The rookie Johnson got the start against a tough Vikes D and managed to get 42 yds on 14 carries, but Kenny Irons stole the show with a 38 yard scamper in the 2nd half. He seemed to pull up with a injury as he was run down from behind. It will be interesting to see who gets the start against the Ravens. The Wr's looked bad, as usual, and rookie kicker Prater shanked yet another kick, oh it could end up being a long season. This writer thinks 8-8 looks like a long shot. Maybe Zeigler isn't so far off with his 5 win comment. |

Bengals Draft Review |
Going into this seasons draft the coaching staff swore to the media that they would address the offensive deficiencies over the past few seasons. We heard it all before, but this draft they actually addressed those needs.
pick 1.18 QB- Tony Pike-Cincinnati, The Bengals were shocked to have the best QB in the draft fall into their laps at the 18th pick. A big 6'6" pocket passer. Reminds people of another top pick the Bengals had a few years ago, in JaMarcus Russell.Strong arm strength, better awareness, less mobile, but better accuracy. Coach Zeigler was expecting to pick a G here but could not pass up a great opportunity at a franchise QB. Todd Reesing stepped in at QB last season and lead the team to the playoffs, but his lack of zip on the ball was trouble when teams shut down the run game and forced the Bengals to pass.
pick 1.23 WR- Kenny Britt-Rutgers, Another big surprise for the Bengals coaching staff, still thinking G here, they could not believe their eyes when a big 6'3 Britt fell here, a good run blocking WR, with strong hands, and good top speed will be a nice addition to the weak WR corps of the Bengals. Britts 40 time might have scared some teams away, but the Bengals are looking to run the ball more so his blocking skills along with his solid hands and good route running should give pike a solid receiver for years to come.
pick 2.17 G Roger Allen-Murry St. With all the top G's picked out the Bengals decided to go for strength Allen was by far the strongest G in the draft, but he is more of a bulldozer then a gazelle, the straight ahead body mover, will need to work hard on is footwork and pass blocking skills. He will have a shot at the starting spot, but looks like a few years of development might be needed a stretch here for the Bengals but Zeigler said he loved the strength on this guy and thinks he can work well on the goal line.
pick2.23 LOLB Jonathan Casillas -Wisconsin, the shortest LOLB in draft but has good top speed, good strength, and at 22 years old has plenty of time to fill in the back up roll and be a special teams guy. Need to work on his quickness, but is a solid tackler.
pick 3.18 HB Gartrell Johnson-Colorado St. The Bengals have two speed backs in Irons ans Slaton, Zeigler was hoping to get Coffee, be he was taken early. Johnson has fullback type speed, but he seems to see the field well and let the play develop in front of him. He is a solid runner which usually needs a few tacklers to bring him down, the Bengals are looking for him to carry the load on short yardage and goal line situations. Zeigler said he was one of the smarter guys he talked to at the combine and liked his attitude.
pick 3.23 K Matt Prater- UCF. Long time K Shane Graham wanted to test the FA waters so the Bengals said, good luck, and with the picking of strong legged Prater it seems like Graham was not in their future plans. Graham had problems outside of 45 yards and are hoping the rook can give the some more distance in the FG department. Zeigler Said the coaching staff will be working overtime to solidify Praters accuracy.
pick 4.23 ROLB Russell Allen- S.D. State, Looking for a backup, this young guy with good size is not a great tackler, and tends to get himself out of position, but has good speed and quickness to help with these flaws, with some solid coaching he may be a future starter, but fills the back up role well.
pick 5.17 RG Louis West-Henderson St. This mountain of a man 6'7" 378 lb behemoth is a raw talent, he needs work everywhere. He has slow feet, not a very good pass blocker, not the strongest guy for his size. Zeigler said he liked his size and the possibility of moving him to tackle. He seems to be headed for Canada and developed there. Roster filler otherwise.
pick 7.18 TE Jaron Mastrud-Kansas St. The Bengals was hoping that Hoomanawani would fall to the 7th round, but the Seahawks took him in round 6. Zeigler released the blocking TE Murphy , and was looking to get a project that knows how to block. Mastrud blocks well and is a tall target, but a little on the light side. The coaching staff will try to develop this young man, but he doesn't seem likely to see much playing time this season.
pick 7.23 CB Jarmar Wall -Texas Tech, needing to fill a roster spot and with only 2 player left on the board the Bengals went for the cover guy. He has good quickness and speed but will need to work hard on tackling and study if he every wants to be more then a special teams, Quarter coverage guy.
Overall the Bengals are very happy with the draft this season, going into the draft with no real pressing needs, they where able to go after the best players available. Picking up Pike, Britt, and Johnson. give the offense some young core players to build around. Zeigler said he needed to upgrade the offense and it looks like he did that. 7 out of 10 picks for the offense seems odd for the defensive minded Bengals. Can this help the Bengals finally win a playoff game?? If not this season, surely in the future it seems. |

Bengals win the North |
| After a punt return for a touchdown on the first punt of the game, and a 78 yard Reesing to Morgan touchdown pass, the Bengals offense got sloppy and could only get 2 FG's out of 8 trips to the red zone against a stingy Chiefs defense. With the time running down and the team set up to try for a FG that would put the Bengals up 10 with less then 2 mins. to go. Coach Zeigler tried to get greedy and pass for a TD to go up 14. The Chiefs got an INT and a chance to get a TD to tie it up. On a 3rd and 7 one of KC's WR's was wide open along the left sideline and Cox hit him right in the hands for an apparent first down. The WR turned his head just a little too soon, and dropped the ball. We are not sure if he was worried about getting hit, or trying for a big gain, but he dropped a wide open pass. It seemed to take something out of the Chiefs offense, on the next play the Chiefs came up short and turned the ball over to the Bengals for a kneel down to end the game. We hope that Coach Zeigler will play a little more wisely in the playoffs if he hopes to get his first playoff win. Good luck to the Chiefs on their playoff run, hope to see ya in the finals. |
