Philly's draft recap...
1.8 LT Trent Williams- Will be opening day starter at LT...thats if current LT Barry Richardson and his 97 RBk agrees to move inside.

1.12 HG Ben Tate- Traded last years rookie HB for this pick and it seemed to work out fine for now. The team is definitely more comfortable with Tate's break-away speed in the backfield.

1.18 CB Kareem Jackson- Could eventually start but will be the third CB.

2.1 FS Major Wright- May take over for unknown SS Godfrey if he struggles early but Godfrey's contract says he won't lose his job. Until then Wright will make most of his plays on special teams.

3.1 RG Charlie Tanner- Decent specimen with some blocking skills but will most likely be sent to Canada.

5.1 LG Thomas Austin- depth

5.18 DE Robert Rose- Philly added another DE from the Buckeye state. Rose posesses great size, strength and speed but will spend a year or two in Canada working on his quickness.

5.22 LT Nick McDonald- depth since Richardson is moving to G

6.1 DE John Fletcher- depth so Rose could be sent to Canada

6.22 QB Pat Grace- 262lbs...lol. If he were only a little younger (24yrs) this beastly QB might have stood a chance to be sent to Canada>>>DEPTH

Management had targeted CB Haden and LG Iupati whom they thought had the best chance at sliding to #8. But with those two going in the top 7, it pushed the draft's top OT down to #8. Knowing the teams slotted between 8 and 12 didn't plan on taking their choice of HB, the team realigned their draft board and took the best available talent figuring that HB Ben Tate would be there at 1.12. Everything was fine and dandy until the Commishes household kept taking their guys...LG Shaun Lauvao, QB, Levi Brown, QB Sean Canfield, LG Alex Parsons. Tilly the least you could do is trade me that lefty QB. He's not anywhere close to being from Michigan Razz

Offseason movements...
The Eagles wasted no time in making their annual deal with Pappy "the trade king". Philly shipped last years 1st round pick, HB LeSean McCoy, to Seattle and got the 12th pick in return. Trade talks actually began around week 10, when Philly management mentioned their displeasure with the top pick to the Seahawks GM and of course Pappy had to inquire about a possible trade. Whether or not McCoy stays in Seattle is the real question.

Next out of the blue, Teedawg asked about the top pick of this years draft. After a few counter offers, the pending deal involves the Eagles 1st and 4th round picks in exchange for two first rounders (8 and 18 ), a 5th rounder and WR Harry Douglas. Eagles brass were semi-undecided on who to take with the #1 so they opted out of the pressure of making that top draft choice. With the team set at only a handful of positions, getting two more 1st rounders will add potential starters and depth to a roster that lost 10 players to free agency last year. With the acquisition of veteran WR Douglas, Sanchez should bounce back from last years abismal effort. Another plus with Douglas on board is that it will allow 2nd yr WR Louis Murphy to spend a year in Canada to focus on his route running and catching ablility...

Season finally comes to an end...
With 6 rookies thrusted into the starting lineup, Philly fans didn't expect much in 2013. But finishing with the worst record in the FCN has the city questioning it's youth movement. The team did have its share of games (4) where they could have won but inexperience reard its ugly head and they came up short...a total of 12 points short. All these games came midseason and the team couldn't recover as it lost it's final 8 contests.

With the #1 pick in this years draft, the Eagles could go in any direction. Last years draft did result in six starters. CB Sean Smith led the team in picks and deflections (5/28 ), WR Hakeem Nicks led the team in receiving (48/737/3) and DE David Veikune led the team in sacks and forced fumbles (8/2). WR Louis Murphy (34/423/1) missed 4 games due to an early season injury but showed some promise averaging 4 receptions a game over the final 6 contests. DT Alex McGee (17 tkls, 4 tfl, 2 sacks) played well in limited duty. But the teams top pick HB LeSean McCoy (1023/8 ) didn't completely convince management that he's a feature back with his 2.52 avg. He took a pounding with over 400 carries but lacked the acceleration to get through the holes to create managable 2nd and 3rd downs. Third year QB Mark Sanchez found it nearly impossible to sustain drives trying to convert the usual 3rd and longs vs zone coverage and it showed with its 32% "success" rate. If it wasn't for his o-line Sanchez might demand an offseason trade. The o-line played well except for the aging RG Marvel Smith (28 pancakes/10 sacks allowed) whom the Eagles already announced won't be resigning. The team has 20 players total with expiring contracts. Some won't be missed but there are a few tough decisions ahead...

Eagles have mostly good feelings after draft day...

1.2 HB LeSean McCoy The Philadelphia Eagles selected McCoy from that university on the west side of the state. Only 21 yrs old, LeSean is still a few progression years ahead of current HB DeMarco Murray in AWR (+12) and CAR (+9). The OL will be creating holes and with McCoy's 70 AWR, he should be able to find them. And with his 83 CAR, the Eagles will cut down on their giveaways. His rookie combine numbers look very similar to the Redskins Clinton Portis and Packers Laurence Maroney...

1.4 CB Sean Smith With the 4th pick in the 2013 FCN Draft, the Philadelphia Eagles selected this 6'3 214lb CB. Tabbed as next next Mel Blount, Smith looks to jump start the Eagles defensive backfield. He'll be paired up with second year player Jameel Dowling, the Eagles other 6'3 corner.

1.21 WR Louis Murphy the Eagles were glad to find the Florida receiver still on the board. There were talks of grabbing Murphy with an earlier pick but with 5 good WRs in the draft, Philly decided to let it ride. Murphy had the fastest 40 time at the combine and should become a favorite target of second year QB Mark Sanchez. He has the size 6'3 and speed to become an elite WR in this league. Let's wait and see...

1.22 WR Hakeem Nicks With only ONE WR on the roster capable of starting, Nicks and his 83 CTH will immediately be the #2 WR moving 4th yr Jason Rivers to the slot.

1.29 RE David Veikune The Eagles didn't expect David to be available and will both targeted OLBs off the board they"quickly" scouted the DE out of Hawaii. A little smaller (257lbs) than what the Eagles were looking at but David should excel in the Eagles 4-3 base defense. Besides Maybin, he's the most mobile DE and yet one of the strongest. The Hawaiian Punch will make the move to LE instead of the newly acquired Lawrence Wilson forcing Mattison to ride the pine.

2.2 DT Alex Magee Eagles wanted to go OL here but saw the very mobile DT out of Purdue still on the board. He has room to grow into his frame and when you combine that with his athletecism you could have a dangerous weapon.

5.18 LG Nick Marshman My auto settings served me well in the 5th round selecting the huge 6'5 345lb LG out of Virginia Tech. Instead of sitting the bench, he'll most likely spend a yr in Canada working on his foot skills.

7.4 RT Marlon Winn Another auto pick...the RT from Texas Tech has decent AWR and blocking skills which will be further developed in Canada.

Tommy reunites with former rookies...
New Eagles GM has a deal pending with his former team that would bring over 2 of his draft picks from last year: RE Lawrence Wilson and FS Anderson Russell. Wilson (30 TKL, 6 TFL, 3 sacks) started every game for Dallas last year and showed evidence that he can be a force on D. Russell, stuck behind standout FS Dawan Landry, got most of his stats (17 TKL, 1 FR) on special teams but could land a starting role with a good showing in preseason.

Looks like Tilly's Redskins celebrated too much during the offseason and weren't ready for Wilson in their first preseason game.

Here's Russell taking Portis to the woodshed... Laughing

Sitting with 8 of the top 36 picks, the Eagles wanted to make a move to land a few players with at least some NFL experience. Grabbing eight rookies that early would have been great but we needed to get ahead of the rebuilding curve. Veteran RE Shaun Ellis and FS Michael Lewis are looking to retire after 2013. So management needed to act and with that extra year's experience Wilson and Russell may not miss a beat filling in for their mentors.
