Back-up leads packers on 4th quarter comeback, Lions escape |
After dominating the game one both sides of the ball through the first half, a second half QB change brought life to a down and out Packers team. Starters Ben Roethlisberger was Superman to Kevin O'Connell's Bizarro Superman; there couldn't be a more disparate play between two quarterbacks. After a pick-6 by Ross to end the first half, and then a follow up pick to start the second half, the Packers coach Stein made the move to the backup. Detroit coach Cessna had earlier played a scrimmage with the Packers, and noted how well their back-up QB LeFevour played in that game. When Coach Stein decided to pull the trigger and bring in the back-up with comfortable 20-3 lead for the Lions, a sense of impending doom came over Coach Cessna. Inevitably, LeFevour was able to find the seam in the zone coverage that had been so effective for most of the game, netting 4 total INTs. Throughout the 4th quarter, LeFevour honed in on WR Parker, scoring 2 straight TDs within mere seconds, as Ben Roethlisberger fell apart, turning the ball over twice within seconds. Eventually, with Dan at the helm, the Packers forged ahead of the Lions, 24-23, with 2 minutes to play. Getting the ball back on their own 20, the Lions felt they could if they could convert at least one first down, they might have a chance. As that first down came, the Lions continued to march down the field, eventually kicking a last second field goal to end the game, 26-24.
With an excellent first half defensively and offensively, the Lions GM walked away from the game very optimistic about the 2-1 Lions' chances this season, however Coach Cessna noticed a disturbing trend in his veteran QB's play when they have the lead: Sloppiness. However, a second trend was noticed when the Lions are behind: Heroics. |
