Carolina On My Mind - Panthers Preview |
The Carolina Panthers head into the 2014 FCN season looking to improve on last season, the best in Panthers’ franchise history. The Cats finished 13-3 and earned the top seed in the NFC playoffs, only to lose to the Redskins on a last-second field goal in the divisional round. Carolina’s Ministry of Information has compiled this offseason review.
DEFENSE
It all started with defense last year, with a top three run defense and FCN Defensive MVP Jimmy Williams at corner (13 INT, 6 TD).
D-LINE & BACKERS
Carolina lost veteran RE Alex Brown to free agency, and is looking to replace him with first round pick Jason Pierre-Paul. JPP should learn from his counterpart, LE Julius Peppers, who is 5th on the FCN all-time sack list with 100. At defensive tackle, the Panthers locked up the solid tandem of Nick Hayden and Jason Shirley. The starting linebacker troika of Davis, Kadela and Hudson are back from last year. Rookie LB Chris McCoy will head to Canada to work on his awareness and tackling ability.
SECONDARY
Starting corners Williams and Lito Sheppard were rock solid last year, combining for 159 tackles, 19 picks and 8 TDs. The Panthers lost nickel CB Chris Gamble to free agency, but picked up promising young corner Simeon Castille to fill the NCB role. Rookie Rafael Priest will gain experience playing the dime and on special teams. The front office had a protracted holdout problem with FS Tra Battle, but the deal is done and everyone is happy. Brandon Condren and Shareff Rashad are fighting it out for the starting SS position.
OFFENSE
The only change from last year is the departure via trade of WR Anthony Gonzalez. The move gives last year’s first round pick Michael Crabtree a starting job opposite Derrick Williams. Rookie wideout David Reed will push veteran Taj Smith for time at the #3 slot. QB Brian Brohm hopes to cut down on his interception total from last year (17), with the same five OL in front of him. TE Kevin Boss is being pushed for playing time by young TE Davon Drew.
BACKFIELD
FB Carl Stewart returns after a productive 2013 season, as does HB Matt Forte, who rushed for over 1000 yards and 15 TDs. Young Keiland Williams backs him up, while Carolina’s other first round pick was HB Lonyae Miller, who is expected to get plenty of touches. Miller has said he expects to be starting before the end of the season.
OVERALL
Consistency in the running game will be a key to success on offense, while on defense, the Panthers must be able to slow down the other team’s passing attack. Given the return of 20 starters under the same coaching philosophy, expectations are there for another good season with a possible return trip to the postseason. Of course, success is fleeting and the Madden Gods can be fickle, so it’s definitely a one-game-at-a-time approach in Carolina for the upcoming season.
DRAFT RECAP
1.20 DE Jason Pierre-Paul
1.29 HB Lonyae Miller
3.29 LT Casey Knips
3.31 WR David Reed
4.21 CB Rafael Priest
4.29 LB Chris McCoy
5.29 QB Dominic Randolph
7.29 LB Denzel Burrell |

Panthers Win Wild One in Arizona |
TEMPE, AZ –
The matchup between a pair of 10-3 teams in the desert was billed as the Game of the Week, and it didn’t disappoint. Seventeen points were scored in the last 3 minutes of the wild game as the Carolina Panthers upset the Arizona Cardinals 31-28.
1st Quarter
The Panthers were without starting LE Julius Peppers, but more importantly, the Cardinals starting QB Carson Palmer was out as well. Backup QB Tyler Palko led the Cards on a long drive in the first quarter, only to turn the ball over on a fumble. Carolina’s offense, led by QB Brian Brohm who returned after a two-week absence, was ineffective in the first frame, and the only scoring was a 51-yard FG by Cardinals kicker Jay Feely.
2nd Quarter
Carolina put together their best quarter of the game offensively, going on two long TD drives, the first one a 9 play, 77 yard drive capped off by a short run by HB Matt Forte.
With less than 2 minutes to play in the half, Brohm connected with WR Anthony Gonzalez to make the score 14-3 Panthers. The Cardinals moved quickly back down the field, but Panthers CB Lito Sheppard picked off Palko in the endzone, leaving the score 14-3 Carolina at the break.
3rd Quarter
As the second half began, Arizona used a balanced attack to move the ball down field. HB Knowshon Moreno scored on a counter, making the score 14-10 with 7:53 to go in the frame. Carolina knew it was a critical part of the game, and they responded, going 69 yards in 14 plays, and eating up 6:27 of clock. Forte’s second TD run of the game gave Carolina their 11 point lead back at 21-10 with only one quarter remaining.
4th Quarter
Once again, Arizona drove the length of the field, but Carolina’s defense stiffened, forcing the Cards to settle for a field goal, which cut the lead to 21-13. The teams traded punts, before Palko led the Cardinals on a game-tying drive, with a touchdown and a two-point conversion. Score tied 21-21 with only 6:26 left.
The Panthers had visions of a game-winning drive, but the drive was stopped short at the ARZ 39 yard line. Carolina decided to take a delay of game penalty to give rookie punter Justin Brantly a little more room to operate, and he did beautifully, dropping the ball dead at the 8 yard line with 3 minutes to play. After a run for no gain on first down, Cardinals QB Palko tried a short out to WR Greg Jennings, but Defensive MVP candidate, Panthers CB Jimmy Williams jumped the route, picked the ball of and danced 8 yards for the go-ahead score, 28-21 Carolina with only 2:30 left.
With no timeouts left, Palko led Arizona on a great drive, hooking up with TE Jeremy Shockey to tie the game at 28-28 with only :47 left.
Carolina was forced to make a decision. Risk a disastrous turnover and lose the game in regulation, or take a chance to win it. Brohm was playing well, and it continued, as he marched the Panthers down the field quickly. He saved one timeout, and when he completed a pass to FB Carl Stewart at the AZ 31 yard-line with 8 seconds left, it was time. The clock ran down to :03 before the final timeout was called, and Panthers kicker Billy Cundiff coolly nailed a 48 yarder at the final gun, capping off a frantic finish and a 31-28 Panthers win.
Leaders
PANTHERS
QB Brohm 24-39, 257, 1 TD, 0 INT, 0 sacks
HB Forte 18 att, 51 yards, 2 TD
WR Crabtree 5 rec, 93 yards
CB Williams 8 tackles, 1 INT, 1 TD
CARDINALS
QB Palko 17-29, 273 yards, 1 TD, 2 INT
HB Williams 28 att, 119 yards
WR Jennings 6 rec, 101 yards
LB Bowen 11 tackles
Catnip
The Panthers OL did not allow a sack against an outstanding Cardinals defense. On the other hand, Carolina managed 5 sacks of Arizona QB Palko, including 2 by backup DE John Williams, playing for Julius Peppers.
Carolina had no turnovers, and of Arizona’s three turnovers, two stopped sure scoring opportunities and the third was turned into the Panther defense’s league-leading 10th touchdown of the season.
With the win, Carolina moves to 11-3 and is now in control of their own destiny for the #1 seed in the NFC. Arizona falls to 10-4 and is in a battle with Washington for the #2 seed and a bye in the first round.

Rain, Turnovers help Carolina over Pittsburgh |
PITTSBURGH, PA –
In a battle of two playoff hopefuls, Murphy’s Law was in full effect for the Pittsburgh Steelers, who coughed up eight turnovers on the rain-slicked Heinz Field turf, helping the Carolina Panthers to a shocking 48-3 victory.
The Panthers’ defense took advantage of the miscues, returning three for touchdowns and using short fields for another touchdown and a field goal, for a total of 31 points off turnovers.
1st Quarter
On the first play from scrimmage, Steelers HB DeAngelo Williams, making his first start against his old team, fumbled the ball, setting up a 22 yard FG by Panthers kicker Billy Cundiff. The teams then traded punts, but Carolina rookie punter Justin Brantly pinned the host Steelers at their own 1 yard line. A three and out gave the Panthers great field position, culminating with Matt Forte plunging in from one yard out. Carolina led 10-0 at the end of the quarter.
2nd Quarter
Pittsburgh responded with a nice drive and a field goal to make it 10-3 with 9:35 left in the half. The teams again traded punts. Carolina lined up to punt from the Pittsburgh 41 yard line, and the Steelers sent 10 men to try and block it. Brantly got the punt off and it sailed towards the sidline. PR Santonio Holmes muffed the punt and Panthers rookie TE Davon Drew recovered at the 6 yard line. Moments later rookie QB Daryl Clark, filling in for injured QB Brian Brohm, found WR Derrick Williams for a touchdown, making it 17-3.
Carolina added a field goal with 1:54 left in the half, extending the lead to 20-3. With less than 10 seconds to go in the half, Panthers CB Jimmy Williams picked off Steelers QB Matt Ryan and raced 56 yards, shocking the Heinz Field crowd and giving the visitors a 27-3 lead at the half.
3rd Quarter
Carolina put together their best drive of the day, going 83 yards in 13 plays and using nearly 6 minutes, as QB Clark hit WR Anthony Gonzalez with a TD strike, building the lead to 34-3. In rapid succession, DE Alex Brown returned a questionable Matt Ryan fumble for a score, then CB Jimmy Williams took his league leading 11th interception back for his 5th TD, ending the scoring at 48-3.
4th Quarter
Both teams were shocked at the outcome, and neither team scored.
LEADERS:
Panthers
QB Clark 16-25, 148 yards, 2 TD, 1 INT
HB Forte 40 carries, 96 yards, 1 TD
WR Williams 5 rec, 62 yards, 1 TD
CB Williams 6 tackles, 1 fum rec, 2 INT, 2 TD
LT Sester 11 pancakes
Steelers
QB Ryan 11-28, 140 yards, 0 TD, 3 INT
HB Williams 19 carries, 18 yards
WR Jones 7 rec, 101 yards
CB Jenkins 9 tackles
LB Colvin 9 tackles
INJURIES:
The Panthers LE Julius Peppers sustained bruised ribs and FS Tra Battle suffered elbow bursitis, but both returned. Steelers QB Matt Ryan took a hard hit and sustained a strained shoulder, but returned. Neither team can afford injuries as we head down the stretch.
NOTES:
The Panthers kept the ball for over 30 minutes. There were a total of seven penalties in the game, many of Pittsburgh’s coming after big plays. Both of Matt Ryan’s fumbles would have been challenged and probably overturned, if possible. Surprising Carolina moves to 10-3, winning their seventh in a row. The win, combined with the Bucs loss to the Bengals, gives Carolina the NFC South division title. Pittsburgh falls to 7-6, their fourth loss in a row, but is still battling Baltimore for the AFC North crown. The bitter rivals will meet in Week 17.
CATNIP:
Carolina QB Brian Brohm returns next week for a big showdown with NFC top dog Arizona, after missing the last two games with a strained oblique. Rookie Daryl Clark won both of those games, going 28-51 for 247 yards with 2 TDs and 4 INTs. HB Matt Forte has 230 yards rushing the last two games.
FINALLY:
We’ve all been there, but I have to applaud Keith’s sense of humor about being “Maddened” the entire game. Normally there are swings back and forth, but he just took in the shorts from the beginning to the end. Good luck the rest of the way, Keith.

Panthers Win Thriller Over Saints |
The Carolina Panthers gave up a 10 point lead in the fourth quarter but managed to escape with a big divisional win against the New Orleans Saints, 23-20. The Saints were without starting QB Matt Leinart, who is sidelined with a sprained knee.
1st Quarter
The Panthers moved the ball well, but had to settle for a pair of FGs from Billy Cundiff and a 6-0 lead at the end of the quarter.
2nd Quarter
Midway through the quarter the Saints went on a long touchdown march, scoring on a QB Adam Tafralis to WR Pierre Garcon touchdown pass, taking the lead at 7-6. Late in the half the Saints were on the move again when Panthers CB Chris Gamble snared an interception at midfield. The Panthers took advantage of the turnover and took the lead with :38 left on a QB Brian Brohm to TE Kevin Boss touchdown pass, 13-7 Carolina at the break.
3rd Quarter
The Saints had the ball for most of the quarter, but could only get one FG, making the score 13-10 with 3:40 left in the third. After a quick three and out from Carolina, the Saints were looking to take the lead, but Panthers CB Jimmy Williams stepped in front of a pass, picked it off and went 48 yards for a huge touchdown. The score was 20-10 Panthers entering the final stanza.
4th Quarter
A field goal for New Orleans early in the fourth quarter made it 20-13. The Panthers were not having much success on offense, while the Saints were moving the ball, only to stall just outside of scoring range. With time running down, young QB Tafralis led the Saints on one last drive. A swing pass to HB Reggie Bush with only :57 left in regulation made the score 20-19, and the PAT leveled things at twenty.
The Panthers, with all three timeouts left, completed a couple quick passes to TE Boss to get out to midfield. After two incompletions, a huge catch by WR Derrick Williams gave Carolina a first down at the 30. Another big catch by WR Anthony Gonzalez put the ball inside the 10 yard line, as the Panthers called timeout with 3 seconds left. Billy Cundiff cooly drilled his third FG of the day on the final play of the game. Final score: Carolina 23, New Orleans 20.
Panthers Leaders
QB Brohm 25-36, 269 yards, 1 TD, 2 INT
HB Forte 18 carries, 69 yards
WR Williams 10 rec, 90 yards
TE Boss 6 rec, 56 yards, 1 TD
CB Sheppard 11 tackles, 3 deflections
CB Williams 6 tackles, 3 deflections, 1 INT, 1 TD
Saints Leaders
QB Tafralis 25-46, 261 yards, 2 TD, 2 INT
WR Garcon 7 rec, 98 yards, 1 TD
WR Smith 7 rec, 81 yards
Notes
The Panthers defense, ranked #3 against the run, held dangerous HB Reggie Bush to just 37 yards on 21 carries.
Carolina improves to 5-3 after an 0-2 start and has moved into first place in the NFC South. New Orleans falls to 3-5 and loses their third in a row. The Panthers will host the Bengals next week while the Saints get another divisional rival, at home with the Falcons.

Panthers Hold on Against Bucs |
The Carolina Panthers took advantage of critical turnovers by the visiting Tampa Bay Buccaneers and held on for a big 34-24 divisional victory.
First Quarter
The Panthers struck quickly, as the Bucs fumbled the opening kickoff and SS Brandon Condren scooped up the ball and raced in for a 7-0 lead. During the next possession, Carolina CB Lito Sheppard picked off Tampa QB Paul Smith, setting up a field goal and a 10-0 lead. After a Tampa punt, the Panthers went on their first sustained drive of the game, with Matt Forte scoring on a 14-yard run, capping off a 10 play, 67 yard drive that ate up 4:20 and a 17-0 lead at the end of the first frame.
Second Quarter
The Bucs calmly got back into the game with a pair of TDs, while shutting down the Panthers offense. Halftime score 17-14, Carolina.
Third Quarter
After trading punts, Carolina scored on a 28 yard TD pass from QB Brian Brohm to WR Derrick Williams, making the score 24-14. The Bucs were moving down the field in an effort to respond, when TE Alge Crumpler had a rare fumble after a long catch down the middle. FS Tra Battle recovered, and the Panthers converted it into a field goal and a 27-14 lead with one quarter left to play.
Fourth Quarter
The first 4 minutes of the final stanza belonged to Tampa Bay, as a field goal and a TD pass from QB Paul Smith to WR Sinorice Moss cut the lead to 27-24 with 8:44 left. Then came the critical drive. Carolina went on a 76 yard drive that used up 4:06, culminating in a 24 yard TD pass from Brohm to WR Anthony Gonzalez. With the score 34-24, the Bucs charged back down the field, but QB Smith threw his third pick of the day (and 5th Tampa turnover), this one a deflected ball in the end zone, snared by SS Battle. From there, the Panthers held on for the victory.
With the Carolina win, the teams split the season series and are both 4-3, atop the NFC South. The Panthers have another divisional test next week as they host the Saints, while the Bucs host the Steelers.
